Welcome to Your English Class
Let me first say, that I am both excited and honored to be your teacher this year. I value all of my students and look forward to getting to know you specifically. My door is always open to discuss what you have on your mind, either academically or personally.
My goal this year is to prepare you academically for what lies ahead and to inspire you to be lifelong learners. As your teacher, I try specifically to tie in the state curriculum with our current “pop culture.” I want you to make the “big connections” between what you study in the classroom and what is happening in the world around you. As always, I look for ways to engage both your intellect and enthusiasm in the daily classroom setting. Therefore, if you have any suggestions that can enhance our daily studies, please feel free to share them with me. I can not wait to start our year-long journey together, and I am looking forward to seeing your smiling face every day!

Vocabulary Helpful Hints
For those students and parents of students who are struggling with the best ways to study for vocabulary tests, here are some suggestions: 1. Always study and know your new 10 words. These words will ALWAYS be on your weekly vocabulary test. Hint: After using the new words for your test, I go back through our old units and randomly choose 10 others. 2. Review your old words by using either flashcards that you make, or you can use the link below to access the on-line tutorial. a. When you get to the Sadlier home page, click on Student Center Levels A-H b. Next, click on LEVEL E—This level is for 10th grade only c. Then, you will see your options of downloading your vocabulary words to an iPod/MP3 (iwords audio), and you will also see where it says “Games and Puzzles.” d. Click on “Games and Puzzles” and scroll down to multiple choice. You can pick any unit and take their multiple choice quizzes to refresh your memory on our past words/units. 3. Before you take the test or even read the questions, using my word bank, on a separate sheet of paper write out the words and the definitions that you have memorized. 4. After completing the above, read the sentences and look for the context clues. These clues come straight from the definitions. You may also want to write the context clues on your test paper before you decide the correct answer. I hope these helpful hints will improve your scores, BUT REMEMBER THAT YOU HAVE TO STUDY AND NOT JUST THE NIGHT BEFORE! I am also including an article about studying as it applies to today’s youth. Parents! This article is very interesting! Forget What You Know About Good Study Habits Welcome to your tenth grade English class. The purpose of this course is to provide you with integrated educational experiences in the language arts strands of reading, writing, listening, viewing, speaking, language, and literature. It is my hope that you will leave this course with effective reading and writing strategies, an increased vocabulary leading to improved articulation methods, and a life-long love of learning. I am looking forward to our year-long journey into the arts together!
