Speech Communications
The purpose of Oral/Written Communications is to learn to communicate effectively in preparation for your career, become knowledgeable in the development of public speaking, and build self-confidence. The saying goes that you learn 10% of what you read, 20% of what you hear, 30% of what you see, and 70% of what you speak, so this class may actually become a basis for success in other classes. This class will be especially beneficial for Seniors who will be presenting Senior Projects this year (or years to come).
Being present and on time for this class is essential to achievement; in fact, we look at every speech (formal or informal) as a major presentation. Missing a presentation could result in an evaluation penalty. Students will also be required to schedule one speaker per semester to speak to the class. The speaker cannot be a high school student or a member of the GHS faculty and staff but can be a parent. This is my eleventh year teaching this course at GHS, and it keeps getting better every year. I am confident that this year will be no exception; thus, if you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me at the school (650-6040 x5903) or e-mail me (barbara.rhodes@ccboe.net).
